How does Biometrics work? Light Reflecting from the Finger
Points of light reflected from the finger There are a large number of curves, ridges and peaks on the surface of a fingerprint. When light is shone onto the finger, the light bounces off these ridges and peaks at different angles. The reflected light is then read by a sensor. While it is impossible to work out what the finger looks like after the reflected light is sensed, the light will reflect in the same way every time the finger is scanned, making it useful to be used when identifying people. Several points at which the light is concentrated (bounces of from different points on the finger and then registering at the same point on the sensor) essentially from a map of light. This does not represent an image of what the fingerprint looks like, however the map is the same every time the finger is scanned using light.

Why Biometric Security for Businesses? Safety and Accountability
Walk around a factory, warehouse or office and sticky notes with PIN numbers are easily found. A sticky note with a PIN number means full accountability does not exist with an organization. This condition may be OK at a receptionist's computer, but what about a $2 million piece of manufacturing equipment, a pharmacy narcotics dispenser or the door to a data room? Biometrics can record the who-when-where of a transaction thereby eliminating the question of who is accountable. And, in the case where someone would prefer not to be accountable, biometrics disallows the ability to blame a borrowed/lost ID card or a borrowed/stolen PIN number.
Leveraging the irrefutable audit trail of biometrics, employers can also use the technology to prevent unauthorized use of valuable and/or dangerous equipment. Many workplace accidents are due to unauthorized activities or not following procedures. addition to the ultimate goal of protecting workers from accidents, a company which chooses to biometrically enable equipment and process should also realize reductions in the insurance premiums by creating a safer workplace for its employees.
Biometric accountability can be utilised by any type of business or institution to enhance employee and process management. By better documenting the whereabouts of people and critical processes, businesses can take a monumental step toward ensuring safety, improving process and quality, and raising levels of accountability. As long as they're looking in the right places, most businesses can easily assess the costs associated with injuries, lost production, theft and quality problems.
